Here are answers to some common questions about video filters and
what they do in Windows DVD Maker.
What are video filters and how do they get installed on my computer?
Video and audio filters are used to help decode and play video
files, so they will ultimately play on your final DVD. Windows DVD Maker uses filters when you add video
and audio files, preview your DVD project, and burn your DVD.
Some video and audio programs automatically install filters when
the programs are installed or used on your computer. Some examples of software
programs that might install filters include programs that let you play DVDs,
burn DVDs, play digital media files, edit video and audio, as well as software
that installs video and audio codecs
on your computer (often called codec packs).
How can I tell if video filters are causing issues in Windows DVD Maker?
Unfortunately, not all of the video and audio filters installed by
other programs are compatible with Windows DVD
Maker. If the filter isn't compatible, you might encounter problems when you try
to perform certain tasks in Windows DVD Maker
(such as adding video and audio files to a DVD, previewing a DVD, or burning a
DVD).
If you notice any of the following symptoms in Windows DVD Maker, there's a chance that an
incompatible filter is the cause:
-
Video appears upside down or distorted when you preview it in Windows DVD Maker.
-
Video is black and no audio plays.
-
Windows DVD Maker stops responding.
-
Audio plays too quickly and is distorted.
-
Audio plays, but video is black.
Note that the items above are only the most common symptoms of
incompatible filters. There can be others.
How can I fix the problems with audio and video filters in Windows DVD Maker?
If you're having problems that could be associated with video and
audio filters not installed by Windows DVD
Maker, you can try to turn filters off. Turning off the video and audio filters
only affects how they are used (or, in this case, not used) in Windows DVD Maker. Turning off a filter in Windows DVD Maker affects only DVD Maker. It doesn't
affect how the filter is used by other programs.
